An Olympic size trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Don’t get me wrong friends, I have been watching as much of the Olympics as possible for the past week. I have nearly become an expert judge in archery and extreme kayaking.  However, Thursday night I was watching for a totally different reason. I found myself fast-forwarding through the sports to get to commercial breaks in anticipation of the release of the newest Rogue One trailer…and it did not disappoint.

The trailer opens with Forest Whitakers character, Saw Garrera from the Clone Wars, setting up the state of the galaxy for us:SD

“The world is coming undone. Imperial flags reign across the Galaxy.”

The styling of the shots throughout the trailer were designed in such a ways as to reflect the original A New Hope look and feel, which I think they do a great job capturing. The scene with Mon Mothma speaking with Captain Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso truly looks like it could be pulled straight from an original cut from 1977.

There are a host of new characters in the film as well and we finally get a chance to hear from a few of them as well.  It feels like all the main resistance characters get at least one line in this trailer, with Chirrut Imwe (played by Donnie Yen) having my favorite line of the trailer.  “I fear nothing. All is as the Force wills it.”  Along with new characters, we see a few new ships as well, primarily the ship being flown by Jyn and Cassian. As a Star Wars vehicle geek, I am beyond excited to see what this new movie gives us.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Ben Mendelsohn) Ph: Film Frame ©Lucasfilm LFLWe saw another view of who I assume will be the main antihero of the film, Orson Krennic. His presence in the trailers and his costume cause him to stand out, wearing a white cape as opposed to the standard drab Imperial uniforms. This is also a stark contrast to the character we see at the end of the trailer, and long rumored to be making an appearance inVader this movie…Darth Vader.

Overall, this trailer was fantastic and I really believe this movie will appeal to more than just the hardcore Star Wars fans. Disney and LucasFilm have done a great job with tie-in materials, ranging from books to the new animated series Star Wars Rebels. While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story directly ties into A New Hope, it is doing a great job of expanding the galaxy as we know it and not feeling as though we are seeing the same story with different names. The more ‘war documentary’ style of this installment, compared to the rest of the series, is a big deviation from the typical space battles and will bring a whole new feeling to the rebellion.  I honestly cannot wait to see it opening night … maybe twice.
