On a recent live show Jimmy and I got into a small debate. Which Disney animated feature length movie was the best? The conversation originated from which movie was the most underrated. It traveled to this topic due a joking statement that Frozen was the most underrated Disney movie of all time. We all know this is totally and completely false. However, as the discussion continued we narrowed it down to a couple of top movies. Check it out here:
As you can tell, we discussed the popular opinion of Frozen dethroning Lion King from the top spot. However, this conversation carried with it some unique turns where we learn that, not only is Frozen not the number one for many people, but that Lion King wasn’t as well. We talked about some great titles including Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Moana, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Coco, and more.
As we got to the end of the discussion we came to realize that our favorite movies are impacted by our connection to them. What was going on in our lives when we sat to see this movie? How do we connect to the characters or to the storyline? I talked about how Lion King came out when I was a junior or senior in high school at a time when I should have been getting away from “little kid” movies. However, I loved holding on to my childhood and still love it to this day.
When I stopped to discuss how these movies are connected to our lives, I immediately thought of my youngest daughter. She has always loved Disney movies, what kid doesn’t? Last year we took her to see Moana and she fell in love. It wasn’t until a couple of months later that I realized why she connected with it so much. Last year she lost her grandmother. Watching Moana go through that loss and watching her grandmother live on gives her some comfort. I am going to imagine that, like Lion King was for me, Moana will be her favorite movie for a long time to come.
