Disney Nerds Getting Crafty: Postcard Art Decor
Disney Nerds Getting Crafty is a series of articles of how we let our Disney passion invade our crafts. Have you ever wondered into one the Art of Disney stores around Disney property and want to purchase everything (or at least a lot of things)? I know I’m guilty of that. I walk around the stores and wonder where I would hang the art pieces up in my home. I don’t leave the store with my arms full of artwork due to cost or lack of wall space but I found a way around both. Buy the postcard! Yes, purchase the postcard and frame it for your home. I have taken several of my favorite pictures and found different configurations to display them.
My first attempt at this was for three postcards that had a similar theme. They are black and white postcards featuring photos of Walt Disney himself with a few colorful friends. I loved the large prints in the art store but didn’t have space. When I was browsing the postcards at the art store I noticed the prints I liked so much were available as postcards. I thought that it would be perfect to frame these postcards and be able to bring these prints I love home. So I bought the prints and had to find a frame. Most postcards are 5×7 (which is a standard photo size is) so it was easier to find frames for them. I searched online and found a great photo collage frame to fit the postcards. The frame came with a mat so I just had to put everything together. I recommend using tape to secure the postcards onto the mat and then placing the mat into the fame. This helps the postcards not slip and move while in the frame. Once I put everything together I loved the look! The frame was just one piece which was easier to display in my home and gave me more flexibility. I realized once I figured this out I knew that there would be more in my future.
My next attempt is actually a work that is continually in progress for now. I am a fan of Jasmine Becket-Griffith’s artwork she’s been doing for Disney. I love her take of the princesses, villains, and even some of the ladies of Star Wars. If I could I would’ve purchased every single larger print of her work in this series with Disney. Sadly, the budget doesn’t allow that and my wall space. So that means I had to deploy the postcard trick again. I began a couple of years ago, I bought every postcard of her Disney series that was available at the Wonderland Gallery at Disney Springs. I believe I started with 4-6 of her prints in postcard size. Her collaboration with Disney grew and I purchases more until I had about 9 postcards. I searched online for a collage frame that would fit 9 photos and had all of my postcards framed. Then, like most good things, more prints came out which meant a second frame was purchased and now I’ve almost filled 2 frames with the work of this great artist’s series that I love (in postcard size of course!). Who knows, if she keeps the series going there might be a third frame in my future!
Now this little trick of mine isn’t restricted to framing the postcards in photo collage frames. I also have found single pieces of art at Disney that I loved and purchased the postcards. I found a great set of single frames and now have some of the postcard mingled in a large gallery of things on one of my walls at home as well as a postcard or two a shelf with other Disney related items.
Buying the postcard of a favorite piece of Disney art is a great way to still get to take that beautiful piece of artwork home but be able to save space in your home and money in your wallet.
I hope you enjoyed this little trick of mine and hope you have fun trying it yourself!
