Straight On Till Morning – A Disney Nerds Book Club Review
This month our book review is going to that second star to the right and straight on to morning!
Yes, we’re going to Neverland! We’re reviewing the next installment of The Twisted Tales, “Straight On Till Morning” by Liz Braswell. This twisted tale asks the question, “What if Wendy first traveled to Neverland with Captain Hook?”
I thought this was an interesting question because why would Wendy want to travel with Captain Hook?! So we meet Wendy four years after almost meeting Peter Pan. She’s now 16, her brothers are off to school every day and she’s home. She has no interest in what a typical 16-year-old girl does like going to tea with other girls her age. Wendy is still dreaming of Neverland and even writing her stories down. One day her parents discover the stories and decide that she should become a governess and they found her a job in Ireland. Wendy doesn’t want to become a governess in Ireland and is also upset that Peter Pan never came for her.
She decides to take matters into her own hands. When she almost met Peter Pan, she ended up with his shadow, which she still has. She decides to offer Captain Hook the shadow in exchange for transport to Neverland. Captain Hook accepts the offer and they head to Neverland. While on board, Wendy becomes suspicious that Hook is up to something and it’s not one of his usual schemes. Wendy has to get off the ship, find Peter Pan, and warn him that something is going on. But will she find him in time?
I really enjoyed this tale. It was a great read to see Wendy as someone beyond the mother-like figure in the animated film. You also read Captain Hook as a little more twisted than what he was in the animated movie. It’s just another great tale from this fun series and I can’t wait to read the next one!
