Disney Nerds Getting Crafty: Hidden Mickey Ornaments
Happy Holidays Disney Nerds!
With the holidays upon
The base of both versions of this ornament is a glass ball ornament or a shatterproof ball ornament. A clear glass one would work great for this project, but I chose to get a pearly silver shade. Your options are endless when it comes to what color and size ornament you’d like to use.
The first ornament I did will give your tree a little bling! All you need for this ornament is some kind of rhinestones from your local craft store (or even online). Rhinestones or jewels can be found in various applications so be sure to check to see if you need glue for whatever rhinestones or jewels you choose. I found some great rhinestones that already had a sticker back to them which made the application very easy. The rhinestones or jewels need to be different size circles because you are going to use them to make your Mickey heads. Just place one larger rhinestone on your ornament with two smaller ones above it to make Mickey’s ears. You can put as many or as little as you’d like on your ornament!
The second ornament is very similar but instead of rhinestones, we use paint. The local craft store has hundreds of options in paints. You want to be sure that the paint will adhere to the ornament which is just as important as picking your color. I chose glitter paint for my ornaments since the Christmas tree lights would make the glitter stand out more. I bought some foam brushes to create the circles needed but found that they didn’t work right. Luckily, I found that the wooden stick on the brushes worked a lot better. I recommend this method or wooden dowels to get the perfect circle.
Just like the rhinestones in the first version, you need two different size wooden dowels or sticks to make the Mickey heads. I also found that I had to apply several coats to the Mickeys so you to really see them. I used an empty egg carton for the ornaments to sit and dry in between coats. If you also use the glitter paint you will need to do several coats as well. It took me 3 or 4 coats to get my desired look. Alternatively, you can also look into paint pens to paint your Mickeys if you prefer.
These two versions are just the basics to decorate your own ornaments with some hidden Mickeys. Your color combinations are endless and if you’re really crafty then why not add a bow on a couple of Mickeys to make them Minnie heads! If you select the clear ornaments then you can always fill them with whatever you want; tinsel, glitter, old park maps, etc!
