Part of Your World: A Twisted Tale – A Disney Nerds Book Club Review
This month’s book club review is all about the world under the sea. We are diving down to Atlantica where we ask the question, What if Ariel never defeated Ursula?
We are referring to Liz Braswell’s “Part of Your World,” which is the 5th book in the Disney Twisted Tales series.
Spoiler Alert
We meet up with Ariel five years after the animated film but things did not end up happily ever after. In the book, Ursula won against Ariel. Ariel is now the queen of Atlantica but never got her voice back. Where’s King Triton? Ariel thinks he’s dead but learns that there might be hope Ursula still has him prisoner. But getting King Triton back isn’t as easy as heading to Ursula’s lair. Ursula is still in the disguise of Vanessa and is now Prince Eric’s wife.
Ariel must now find a way to sneak onto land, find out if her father is still alive, and rescue him. It seems simple enough to her at first but then she discovers that there’s more she must do. She must also help Eric’s kingdom which is under the cruel rule of Ursula/Vanessa. Also, there’s a conflict of her feelings for Eric. She still loves Eric but could letting those feelings come back to the surface cost her everything including her father?
My Thoughts
What I like about this Twisted Tale is that it began at the end of the animated film we know. Most of the other books in this series have their “twist” in the beginning or middle of the story we are familiar with. In this version, everything that we know from the film happened except the happy ever after. I enjoyed that because not only did I meet and get to know a different version of Ariel, it was also an older version. She was a version that grew up because of the choices she made in the film. She learned from her experiences and was more aware of the fact that her choice have consequences. I really enjoyed escaping into this story because of that.
So far, the Twisted Tales have all been great but I think that “Part of Your World” might be one of my favorites!
Have you ready “Part of Your World?” What did you think?
