Prepare to Let Your Inner Child Run Wild in Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time”
Disney is known for their meaningful and feel good movies – each film jammed packed with life lessons that we carry with us throughout life. Ask anybody and I’m sure they have a favorite that has impacted them in some significant way. And Disney’s latest release, A Wrinkle in Time, is all that and more. It is everything you expect to see in a Disney film but on such a level that makes it even more magical and yet it is perhaps the most grounded film in Disney history.
Mesmerizing Scenery and Avant-garde Costumes Add to the Playful Wonder of the Universe
To say that the visual effects in this film are stunning would be an understatement. They are breathtaking. So much so that I would be willing to pack up my bags and Tesser to planet Uriel in a heartbeat. Bright, bold colors surrounded by lush vegetation bring forth a feeling of childhood innocence and imagination. Giant flying leaf creatures and flowers that speak the language of color come to life in a spectacular manner. It is as if your imagination has come to life in the most vibrant way possible.
And it’s not just the visual effects that are out of this world. The costumes and makeup of the magical beings known as Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which are incredible. Gem-encrusted eyebrows, glittering lipstick, bright fabric twisted in the most interesting ways add to the fantastical theme of the film. If this movie doesn’t win an Oscar for makeup and costume design then there is a serious problem with this world.
Storm Reid is a Breakout Among A Star-Studded Cast
Storm Reid is phenomenal as the main character Meg Murry. She perfectly encapsulates the struggle of a young girl coming of age in a world of impossible expectations and the overshadowing grief of her missing father. She is smart and complex, self-doubting and brave. Reid gives such a moving performance that I guarantee that you’ll leave the theater with a few tears in your eyes.
Deric McCabe is absolutely adorable as the bright and headstrong Charles Wallace. He’s the little brother we all dream of having. And of course, we can’t forget about the big names, like Oprah who is huge in this film. I literally mean huge, like she is so big she is as tall as a mountain. She is inspiring as Mrs. Which. Reese Witherspoon is hilarious as Mrs. Whatsis and Mindy Kaling delivers an insightful performance through powerful quotes as Mrs. Who.
This cast is incredible. They have brought to life wonderful role models for children of all ages to look up to. They encapsulate wonder, a thirst for learning, and the potential for courage we all have deep inside of us.
DuVernay Tells a Story that Transcends Time to Inspire Young and Old Minds Alike
The most important part of the movie, however, is the timeless and timely lesson of love and hope. Director Ava DuVernay captures this message perfectly by illustrating the importance of self-love and giving love to others in bright, magical color.
Just as Meg struggled with her faults, we often find ourselves in this situation every day. But she learns to accept herself, flaws and all. Her journey reminds us that we are beautiful, even the parts that we don’t like.
And it’s not just self-love that matters but the love we give to others. It goes beyond just our family and friends but to strangers and even those who are hateful to us. Everyone has a struggle and it might not always show. We must be kind, understanding, and most of all, loving. Without love, we let the darkness consume us.
Hope also plays a big role in this film and it’s a much-needed sentiment in today’s society. No matter how hard things might seem, we must have hope. We must always keep fighting for hope, never giving up on ourselves, our peers, or the world in which we live. We must always keep striving to make out lives and the lives of neighbors better.
Love Powers the Universe
Without love and hope, the darkness wins. Hope and love are the only things that can defeat the anger, fear, and hate all around us. These lessons are so important to teach young people and remind those of us who might have forgotten.
A Wrinkle in Time is a movie for all ages. It taps into our inner child, reverts us back to the whims of childhood where your imagination can run free. It reminds us to love and always fight for hope. When you open your mind to the possibilities of the universe, you can do anything.
