Tips for Keeping Cool in Walt Disney World

Hi ya pals!  So I was listening to The Disney Nerds Podcast show number 292 when Ed, Sam, and Morgan discuss Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland, but they also discussed tips for keeping cool while at Walt Disney World.  As you all know, it’s hotter in Florida than most other states during this time.  So I thought I would piggyback on the show and add a few tips of my own.  Here were a few of the crew’s tips…

  1. Get to the parks early.  The parks are packed during the summer.  You can enjoy the parks early get some attractions in, go back to the resort rest, swim, and go back to the parks early evening and get more attractions in.  Before I was a resident, I had a lot of trouble going back to the resort during the day.  I felt like I had to see it all.  As I became a more seasoned visitor, I learned to go back and rest and wondered to myself why I didn’t do that in prior visits.
  2. Rest – This goes along with the first tip. It is so hot and humid in the summer here (well really most of the year), the sun really wears you out, and if you’re not careful, it can really take a toll on you.  I see more paramedics in the park during the summer because guests are trudging through the parks and they are not prepared for our climate and pass out.
  3. If you’re staying on grounds, be sure to utilize the Extra Magic Hours. There are morning and evening Extra Magic Hours almost daily.  This is where your park hopper pass can come in handy.  You can visit Magic Kingdom for EMH in the morning, and follow tips 1 and 2, and go back for evening EMH at Epcot.  When you check into a Walt Disney World Resort, they’ll give you a sheet with all of the EMH times and parks.  You can also find out prior to arrival via your My Disney Experience app.
  4. HYDRATE – In my opinion, this is the single most important tip for beating the heat. People get dehydrated and wind up in the medical facility in the park, or get a visit from the paramedics.  The carts in the parks will give you free water.  Morgan likes to bring a refillable bottle.  They also suggested to freeze the water the night before so it stays cold.
  5. A/C – If you’re in the parks during the hottest part of the day, take advantage of the shops, or attractions that have a/c! Soak up as much as you want…that is free!
  6. Hand-held portable fans – Disney sells them (you know we’ve all seen them, the fan with the mister). You can also bring your own fan.  I’ve noticed more and more people with smaller children are attaching them to the strollers to keep the kids cool.
  7. Cooling Towels – Wet these towels and put them around your neck. Keeps you feeling cool as a cucumber.  When the towel dries, simply re-wet it.  I actually bought one for my husband and myself, haven’t tried it yet, but I bought them.
  8. Clothing – Wear light clothes that reflect the sun. Moisture resistant clothes are also suggested.  Hats, sunglasses were also suggested.  I’m not a big fan of hats, they make my head hot, but I do wear light clothes and sunglasses.  My husband didn’t wear his hat one time and his scalp got sunburned.
  9. Play in the rain – This is Central Florida. We have rain daily.  You’re wet already why not walk in the rain to cool off?  Kids love it when parents give them permission to play in the rain.  However, I must caution you to only cool off in the rain provided there is no lightning around.  We want to keep you safe after all.
  10. Eat – Try to snag a lunch at one of the many sit down restaurants they have available. Getting in that A/C for a bit and having an opportunity to relax will make a world of difference.

How do you Keep Cool in Walt Disney World in the parks?  We normally go early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
