Disney Nerds Comic Corner: Wizards of Mickey: Vol. 1

Hello Disney Nerds!

We’ve got another Disney comic for you and this one features our favorite mouse, Mickey!

It’s called “Wizards of Mickey” and it’s an Italian comic series that began in 2006. It was then published over here in the United States in 2009. I found it currently being released in book form not single comics and separated into three volumes.

Today we’re going to talk about Volume One: Origins. The first volume introduces us to Mickey and other familiar characters in new roles.

The story finds Mickey Mouse living in a village as a sorcerer’s apprentice to a grand wizard named Nereus. Nereus leaves on a trip to do research at The Great Library of Bukara. He leaves Mickey in their village to look over the magical stone the wizard has there, called a Diamagic. As we would expect in any Mickey Mouse story, the magical stone is taken by Pete and Mickey has to go after it. On his adventure, he meets two other young wizards, Goofy and Donald Duck. Goofy and Donald join Mickey’s journey and they end up in the capital city of Grandhaven. While there, Mickey learns of the Grand Sorcerers Tournament. The tournament ends up being the only way Mickey can get the Diamagic stone back.

Mickey enters the contest with Goofy and Donald because the tournament requires a team of wizards (good thing Mickey met them on his way). The tournament is full of quests against other wizard teams and it turns out there are other Diamagic stones. The diamagic stone that belonged to Mickey’s mentor Nereus helps control the rain but it turns out each stone does something different. Throughout the different quests of the tournaments, Mickey earns other diamagic stones and we learn about what each stone does. We also see that Pete and is in the tournament. Pete and his team of wizards want all the diamagic stones and they don’t seem to be playing fairly in the tournament (no surprise there).

We follow this storyline and realize that there is a darker evil after the diamagic stones. This darker evil has even captured Mickey’s teacher, Nereus. Mickey must figure out how to defeat this evil, free Nereus, and finish the tournament.

I won’t spoil any more of the storyline for you but I must say it’s a great comic series.

I do want to point out that it’s considered a younger-level story so it might seem a little juvenile to adults. For me, it was pretty easy to realize how this volume was going to end. With that being said it’s a great read for kids and I’d recommend it for any child to read. I would still recommend it to any Disney fan that loves Mickey because let’s face it, when you’re a Mickey fan you’ll read almost anything with your favorite mouse!

To me, it was interesting to read this storyline because it’s not like the stories that are originally published in the US first. This is not a story of the Sorcerer Mickey that we know and love. This is a sorcerer apprentice, unlike the story we know from Fantasia too. So it’s always fun to read about Mickey in a storyline we’ve never heard before.

I’m interested in where the other two volumes will take Mickey and his friends so I made sure to pre-order Volume 2 from my local comic book store. I already have it in hand so be sure to stay tuned to that review SOON!
