Star Wars: The High Republic: Into The Dark – A Disney Nerds Book Club Review
It’s time to go back to that galaxy far, far away. Yes, we dove into another installment of Star Wars for this month’s book club and it was awesome. This month we read “Star War: The High Republic- Into The Dark” by Claudia Grey. We’ve read some Star Wars cannon from Claudia Grey before but this is the first one in The High Republic timeline.
This story we meet Padawan Reath Silas, who is more of a bookish jedi. He rather hang out in the archives and study history than have an adventure of his own. So when his teacher Jedi Master Jora Malli tells them of their new mission he is not happy. They are to leave the capital of Coruscant and head to the frontier and the Starlight Beacon. Realth doesn’t want to go and ends up staying behind just for a few weeks to finish a historiography class at the Jedi Temple.
When we finally has to depart, he find he’s not the only one leaving. Jedi Knight Dez Rydan, (who is Jora Malli’s first Padawan), Orla Jareni (a recently declared Wayseeker who operates independently of the Jedi High Council), and Master Cohmac Vitus (a noted scholar and folklorist who Realth has admired through his many books) all are on the same departing ship.
The ship they are taking is called the Vessel. It is owned by the Byne Guild, arrives and captained by Leox Gyasi. Their copilot is Affie Hollow, she is young and we later learn the daughter of the head of the Byne Guild. But their most interesting shipmate might be the navigator, Geode. He is a Vintian who looks like nothing so much as a large rock.
En route hyperspace becomes turbulent. Leox and Affie attempt to keep the Vessel on its heading. While trying to keep the ship together they notice debris coming through hyperspace. It looks like the Legacy Run which is a Byne Guild ship. It is also the ship that Scover Byne (the guild’s head and Affie’s mother) sometimes travels on. The debris and crisis in hyperspace cause the Vessel to have to drop out of hyperspace. When looking for some place to go Affie discovers coordinates programmed in the ship that lead them to safety. They arrive at an abandoned space space station. They also hear over the comms that hyperspace routes have been shut down all over the galaxy. Looks like they are staying put for a while.
But the Vessel and it’s passengers aren’t the only ones who discover this abandoned space station. Several other ship have too. Everyone docks at the station and the Jedi end up having to help keep peace between the different ships. Who knows how long they’ll be there and they need to all get along while they’re there.
And if that wasn’t enough, there are some strange vines all over the ship and a feeling of darkness that the jedi can’t shake. Something isn’t right on this station.
My Thoughts
I have to admit that so far, this is my favorite of the High Republic series. It is a great story and really pulled me in. I don’t want to give away the ending but this instalment shows that there’s more going on in this timeline than just what happened in the hyperspace incident of the Legacy Run. We also meet more characters from this timeline which makes me hope that we will meet them again in other books from this series. Personally, I’m really starting to enjoy the High Republic cannon and meeting these characters that are not known in any of the films. I highly recommend it for any Star Wars fan.
So what did you think? Did you enjoy “Star War: The High Republic- Into The Dark” by Claudia Grey? What are your thoughts on The High Republic so far?
We look forward to seeing you next month when we discover another great book for the Disney Nerds Book Club!
